Paid Character Re-Customization Comes to WoW
2009-03-10 00:00:00
Character Re-Customization FAQ Character Re-Customization allows you to change a variety of things about your character (race and class excluded), and can be accessed via the new link added to the Account Management page. A character may only be customized once every 30 days, so make sure your choices are what you actually want, otherwise you'll waste $15 and have to wait to change it again! The FAQ can be found here: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?tag=CRCFAQ What is Character Re-Customization Character Re-Customization is a paid service that lets you change an existing character's gender, face, skin color, and other cosmetic features determined by his or her race and gender combination. When you perform a Character Re-Customization, you may also change the character's hair color and hair style (similar to the in-game barbershop) and select a new name, if desired. Can I change my character's race or class No, you cannot alter a character's race or class. You may only change cosmetic features of a character through Character Re-Customization. How much does this service cost A single Character Re-Customization costs $15 (not including applicable taxes). This flat fee covers all customiz...
Patch 3.1 PTR Priest glyph changes thus far
2009-03-10 00:00:00
One of the things Patch 3.1 is supplying in spades is glyphs and glyph changes. Every class is getting a ton of them, and it's really hard to keep up with them there are so many. Priests are coming out alright so far through the whole process, with a lot of our current glyphs being improved and our new glyphs being legitimately useful, if situational. Let's see what's new, shall we Glyph of Fade - Reduces the cooldown of your Fade spell by 9 sec. (Old: Increases the duration and cooldown of your Fade spell by 50%.) This is massively better than what it was previously, and I suspect that this will become a popular Shadow Priest glyph in PvP. Two points in Veiled Shadows plus this glyph means a 15 second cooldown on Fade. Every 15 seconds, a Shadow Priest will be able to clear all movement impairing effects, assuming they have Improved Shadowform. That's pretty friggin' sweet. Glyph of Psychic Scream - Increases the duration of your Psychic Scream by 2 sec. and increases its cooldown by 8 sec. (Old: Increases the duration of your Psychic Scream by 1 sec.) I don't think anybody used this glyph previously, and I don't expect that'll change any. The previous version is arguably better because it doesn't in...
Patch 3.1
2009-03-10 00:00:00
Better watch your step. Eyonix dropped some more knowledge in regards to class specific changes scheduled for patch 3.1.0. Are you ready? MAGE Improved Water Elemental - this talent has been removed and replaced with a new talent that grants Replenishment (similar to Shadow priests). We are also working on a way to give frost mages Ice Lance "Shatter combos" in PvE. We are also working on more survivability for Fire spec in PvP. We are also working on making Spirit a more useful and interesting stat for all mages. PALADIN Blessing of Kings - this spell is now a base ability trainable by all paladins. Exorcism - this spell now causes damage to all types of enemy targets. However, it always critical strikes undead or demon targets. This change should make sure paladin damage doesn't drop when going from Naxxramas to later tiers of content. Shield of the Templar now causes your Avenger's Shield and Shield of the Righteousness to silence targets for 3 sec. The old damage bonus of this talent ha...
Perfect World importing more free-to-play games into Western markets
2009-03-10 00:00:00
Chinese game company Perfect World has gained 50 million registered players throughout Asia thanks to its free-to-play business model for games such as the fantasy title Perfect World. Now the company is expanding in the U.S. The company launched Perfect World International in the U.S. as a free game about six months ago and has about a million registered users. Today it launched a closed beta for EtherSaga Online, a new fantasy role-playing online game aimed at young people. The games also let you but virtual goods, such as clothing that makes your game character look cool, a better sword to give you better capabilities. Roughly 10 percent of players spend money on these goods, enough to compensate for the games being free, said Yoon Im, dreictor of operations for Perfect World Entertainment (the U.S. subsidiary) in Redwood City, Calif. The question that the Chinese game companies face is whether they can make the shift from Eastern to West...
Phat Loot Phriday
2009-03-10 00:00:00
by Mike Schramm { 1 hour ago } Jan 23rd, 2009 Yeah, we're going a little hefty this Friday (as in, low level, so not quite that phat), to focus on an item that's new, but only kind of, in patch 3.0.8. Name: Mallet of Zul'Farrak (Wowhead, Thottbot, Armory) Type: Quest Item Rare Unique One-hand Mace Damage/Speed: 58-109 / 2.50 (33.4 DPS) Abilities: +8 Strength, +8 Stamina Yes, this is the legendary Mallet of Zul'Farrak, the one you had to fight all the way up to the top of Jintha'alor to get in order to summon Gahz'rilla in the midlevel instance of Zul'Farrak down in Tanaris. But as of patch 3.0.8, this mallet, and a few other items, are now not ne...
Phat Loot Phriday

A brand new continent, full of new loot to get. We'll start off with this rep piece -- if you're Alliance and need a ranged weapon and a rep to grind, Vanguard is a good place to start. Name: Sawed-off Hand Cannon (Wowhead, Thottbot, Allakazham) Type: Rare Gun Damage/Speed: 208-386 / 3.10 (95.8 DPS) Abilities: +17 Agility, +27 Stamina. Not too shabby at all. And it even gives you +18 hit rating, which is extra nice (by 78 you've hopefully already reached your hit cap, whatever that is, but putting it on the gun and off of your other gear will allow for a little more flexibility. It's an all-round good gun on your way up to 80 -- there will certainly be better but for the rep, which you'll probably get sleepwalking through Howling Fjord, it's a new rew...
Phat Loot Phriday
2009-03-10 00:00:00
Yes, I'm pretty sure this is the second Feral Druid piece we've done in a row (even though last week was technically a combination of PvP gear). We'll do a Warlock piece next week -- or if there's something you're specifically wondering about, speak up in the comments. But look at that staff -- how could we pass this up Name: Staff of Trickery (Wowhead, Thottbot, Wowdigger) Type: Epic Staff Damage/Speed: 358-537 / 2.40 (186.5 DPS) Abilities: +89 Agility, +133 Stamina Adds 1843 Feral Attack Power Increases attack power by 180 This i...

We don't usually cover PvP items that much (for a number of reasons), but when you compare cost vs. reward, this helm is one of the best. Name: Titan-forged Leather Helm of Triumph (Wowhead, Thottbot, Armory) Type: Epic Leather Helm (see below) Armor: 458 Abilities: +73 Agility, +103 Stamina A meta and a red socket, with a socket bonus of +8 crit rating Gallery: Phat Loot Phriday Improves resilience by 59, attack power by 58, and armor penetration by 44 This is a nice helm for Rogues, but it's especially nice for Druid feral tanks -- considering that they stack Agility, it even rivals the Tier 7 helm of theirs. Thanks to David of the People in Chicago who Drink and WoW group for pointing this out to me the other night. Since this is a PvP helm, there are actually versions for every class out there. Not all of them are probably as good compara...
Planting a Seed
2009-03-10 00:00:00
It seems that so many new games today are canceled before they really get off the ground. The latest in this exit stream is a game called Seed, a sci-fi non-combative, roleplay-centric MMORPG. The goal in this game was the building of a society by means of socialization. Resources were extremely limited, so it was up to the players to decide how things should be allocated and built. The players had control of how far the society, and thus the game, went. Todays market for MMORPGs hosts few blockbuster titles. Those that stand head and shoulders above the rest seem to be the ones that contain something for everyone. They contain combat, crafting, roleplaying, a player-driven economyevery playing style has their portion of the game that they can enjoy. There are purely social games out there, There and the Sims, among others. They have no combat, they focus on the socialization and roleplaying of the players. What do they have that games, like Seed, do not? What could be done differently to encourage people away from the leveling grind of games like World of Warcraft? These are tough questions because they lead to an even tougher one. What makes a good game? Ive offered three key eleme...
Play it just one more time
2009-03-10 00:00:00
This week at TenTonHammer the community managers at each of our sites are looking at how games handle the end game. Is the repeatable instanced endgame a good way to handle a level capped game? World of Warcraft uses this schema and it is the current killer MMO on the market, does that make it the best method or just the current favorite method. I also take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of using it as a system. What is this system The repeatable endgame instance setup in games is the currently most popular way to handle keeping players busy and playing once they hit maximum level in a game. They do this by making drop rates on key equipment pieces low and specific to certain end game instances so that you have to run the instance many times to get the items that you want. Another method to make players run the end game instances over and over again is reputation or token collection. This method makes you repeat instances to earn reputation or tokens that allow you to gain equipment, or access to new quests. Ok, how does this system work in WoW Blizzard has mastered this system of end game play in World of Warcraft. They use the system in many forms and layers. They use the ...
