How Blizzard Plays - The Tauren Shaman2009-09-22 00:00:00One of the consequences of Blizzard making World of Warcraft the kind of "friendly" MMO where (according to the developers) "you can get something accomplished in a lunch hour" is that a lot of people are going to be playing the game who have never played an MMO before. As a result, many of these players may be unfamiliar with the basic terms and concepts of MMOs, to say nothing of the higher level strategies and combinations of skills and equipment that can make you a truly formidable player. That's why we asked three of Blizzard's Community Team to give us some advice based on the way they play the game. Today's entry comes from Caydiem who has clearly attended one too many Earth Days - thus the decision to tread softly on Azeroth as a Tauren Shaman. Tauren Shamen are actually a very versatile class, tough enough to hold their own in a scuffle but also very welcome in groups because of their healing abilities. If you'd like to...

Perfect World importing more free-to-play games into Western markets2009-03-10 00:00:00Chinese game company Perfect World has gained 50 million registered players throughout Asia thanks to its free-to-play business model for games such as the fantasy title Perfect World.
Now the company is expanding in the U.S. The company launched Perfect World International in the U.S. as a free game about six months ago and has about a million registered users. Today it launched a closed beta for EtherSaga Online, a new fantasy role-playing online game aimed at young people.
The games also let you but virtual goods, such as clothing that makes your game character look cool, a better sword to give you better capabilities. Roughly 10 percent of players spend money on these goods, enough to compensate for the games being free, said Yoon Im, dreictor of operations for Perfect World Entertainment (the U.S. subsidiary) in Redwood City, Calif.
The question that the Chinese game companies face is whether they can make the shift from Eastern to Weste...

Planting a Seed2009-03-10 00:00:00It seems that so many new games
today are canceled before they really get off the ground. The latest in this exit stream is a game called Seed, a sci-fi non-combative, roleplay-centric MMORPG.
The goal in this game was the building of a society by means of socialization. Resources were extremely limited, so it was up to the players to decide how things should be allocated and built. The players had control of how far the society, and...
